CGC-certified First Appearances of Hulk and Iron Man in ComicLink Sale
Posted on 1/19/2024
A couple of Avengers have assembled to lead the way in ComicLink’s Focused Auction on January 22, 2024. The sale includes many first appearance comic books, graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®).
Among the CGC-certified highlights in this auction is an Incredible Hulk #1 graded CGC 3.0, featuring the first appearance of the Hulk in 1962. The debut issue, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, delved into the origin story of Dr. Bruce Banner. A mishap with gamma radiation triggered a transformation, turning Dr. Banner into an uncontrollable green behemoth when gripped by intense anger. Notably, the initial portrayal of the Hulk in this first appearance was in a gray shade. However, due to printing challenges, the character's color was changed to the now-iconic green hue starting with the second issue, released a few months later.

The first appearance of another Avenger is also offered in this auction with a Tales of Suspense #39 graded CGC 7.5, which has the debut of Iron Man. This 1963 comic by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Larry Lieber and Don Heck serves as an examination of communism and the Cold War of the 1960s. Portrayed on screen by Robert Downey Jr., Tony Stark's armored persona not only helped revitalize superhero films but also became a symbol of charisma, redemption and technological prowess.
