CGC-certified Tales of Suspense #39 Realizes $840,000 in Heritage Sale

Posted on 4/10/2024

The April auction included impressive results for other grails, including Action Comics #1 and Captain America Comics #1.

Heritage Auctions recently hosted a historic comic book sale, featuring incredible grail comics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®). Many realized impressive results in the Comic and Comic Art Signature Auction, which was held April 4-7, 2024.

The auction was led by an Action Comics #1 with a Kansas City pedigree graded CGC 8.5 (lot 91002) that realized a record-breaking $6 million! (Read more about that sale here.) While Superman topped the sale, there were plenty of other amazing comics for which bidders competed enthusiastically.

Highest among these was a Tales of Suspense #39 graded CGC 9.8 (lot 91025) that realized $840,000. Published by Marvel Comics in 1963, this comic features the first appearance of Iron Man by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. In the comic, weapons manufacturer Tony Stark is injured and captured in Vietnam. He secretly creates an iron suit to help him escape and become Iron Man. Iron Man was a founding member of the Avengers in 1963 and continued to appear in Tales of Suspense until the series shifted its attention to Captain America in 1968.

That nicely leads us to the next highest comic in this sale, which was a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 9.2 (lot 91009) that realized $750,000. Published in 1941 by Timely Comics, Captain America Comics #1 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon features the first appearances of Captain America, Bucky and the Red Skull.
