The Goldin Auctions sale on June 1 includes the first issue of Superman, published in 1939.

A wide range of collectibles are being offered in Goldin Auctions’ Goldin 100 Part One auction on June 1, but there’s only one comic, and it’s a big one — a Superman #1 graded CGC 2.0 (lot 10).

Published in 1939, Superman #1 is one of the most valuable and sought-after grails in comic collecting. This issue marks the first standalone comic book dedicated entirely to Superman, following his debut in Action Comics #1 published on April 18, 1938, by creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Superman #1 was the first comic book title devoted entirely to one hero. The debut issue featured several stories, including Superman's origin story retold, where readers learn about his journey from the doomed planet Krypton to becoming the defender of truth and justice on Earth.

This iconic comic book has garnered staggering prices in the collector's market, demonstrated by notable sales such as the private transaction of $5.3 million for an example graded CGC 8.0 in 2022. That sale made the title the second-most valuable in comics of all time, only surpassed by Superman's first appearance in Action Comics #1.

The enduring appeal of Superman #1 is evident in additional sales, including a CGC 7.0 copy commanding $1.62 million at Goldin Auctions in 2023 and a CGC 7.0 copy fetching $2.34 million at Heritage Auctions in 2024. Even examples in lower grades almost always realize six figures, and this particular one already had attracted a six-figure bid (including the buyer’s premium) more than a month before the sale.

The Goldin 100 Auction also includes a Pokémon 1997 Japanese No. 2 Trainer card graded CGC 9.0 (lot 28) and a Playboy Magazine #1 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 11).
