New Resource: CGC Grader Notes Guide (Excerpted from ‘The Official CGC Guide to Grading Comics’)

Posted on 5/17/2024

The 109 different defects that CGC identifies on a comic are grouped into seven general classifications, with a description provided for each defect.

Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) is excited to announce a free new online resource for collectors: the CGC Grader Notes Guide, excerpted from “The Official CGC Guide to Grading Comics” by CGC President Matt Nelson.

Grader notes are a valuable part of the grading process that provide more information about CGC-certified comic books. When CGC graders examine a book, they may enter comments about its condition that describe problems, indicate the quality of interior pages and help explain why a collectible received the grade it did.

Some examples of CGC Grader Notes include:

  • Right Center Front Cover Lite Fingerprints
  • Left Center Back Cover Moderate Erasure Mark
  • Top Spine Water Damage
  • Staple Rusted w/Rust Stained Interior
  • Interior Heavy Tanning

Now with the online guide, collectors can learn more about each type of defect, and if applicable, a general grade range that a comic may fall into when exhibiting a particular defect, depending on the defect’s severity.

For those seeking even deeper insights, "The Official CGC Guide to Grading Comics" is an invaluable resource. Over the course of 400 pages, the book expands on the information found in the online Graders Notes Guide, offering more thorough explanations and illustrative examples of each defect to collectors submitting to CGC Comics.

“They are educating themselves so they can be better submitters and better collectors, and they are more aware of what our standards are when they’re buying CGC-graded books,” Nelson said.

You can order your own copy of “The Official CGC Guide to Grading Comics” by visiting the online store here.
