Heritage Sale Features World War II Comics Certified by CGC

Posted on 5/24/2024

Superman and Captain America were among those who joined the cause in World War II comic books offered in an early June Heritage Auctions sale.

World War II was an era of heroes, and many superheroes joined the fight on the covers of early comics. More than 100 comic books graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) are included in Heritage Auctions’ World War II Cover Comics Showcase Auction on June 6, 2024.

Among the classic World War II cover comics in this auction is a Captain America Comics #46 graded CGC 2.5 (lot 81026) as well as a Superman #26 graded CGC 6.5 (lot 81163).

During World War II, comic books underwent significant transformations, both in content and popularity, reflecting the global conflict's influence. Even before the United States officially entered the war, comic book heroes like Superman and Captain America were depicted battling Nazis and supporting the Allied cause. Captain America’s debut in 1941, with the iconic cover of him punching Adolf Hitler, is a prime example, published months before the Pearl Harbor attack.

These stories were infused with a heightened sense of patriotism and urgency, serving as both entertainment and propaganda. The themes of courage, sacrifice and unity dominated storylines, resonating deeply with readers, including members of the armed forces who sought entertainment and escapism. This era marked the Golden Age of comics, where superheroes became not just fictional characters but also embodiments of the collective hope and determination of a nation at war.
