Featuring the first appearance of Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1962, the Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 4.0 (lot 17442) realized $36,000.

After the character’s immediate success in Amazing Fantasy #15, Marvel rushed Spider-Man into his own monthly series, and he has become one of the most recognizable superheroes of all time. In celebration of the hero, Spider-Man Day is traditionally held in August each year to coincide with the August date published on the cover. However, covers are often dated several months ahead of their actual newsstand release dates. Copyright records suggest Amazing Fantasy #15 was likely released on June 5, 1962.

This wasn’t the only Spider-Man comic to climb the sales chart in this auction. An Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 1.0 (lot 17443) also realized $11,400, along with an Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 4.5 (lot 17444) which realized $9,300 and a restored example graded CGC 1.8 (lot 17445) which realized $3,720.

Prices realized include a buyer’s premium.
