CGC-certified Marvel Mystics in ComicLink Auction
Posted on 5/28/2025
By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth! ComicLink’s Spring Featured Auction on May 27 through June 5, 2025, features classic comics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), including the first appearance of two of Marvel’s most memorable mystics!
Among the highlights offered for a spell is a Strange Tales #110 graded CGC 9.6, with the first appearance of Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange. In this story, Dr. Steven Strange was an arrogant neurosurgeon whose life took a mystical turn after a car crash shattered his hands and his career. He sought healing and instead found enlightenment under the Ancient One, mastering the mystic arts and defending Earth from supernatural threats. Armed with relics like the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation, Strange guards the fabric of reality against interdimensional threats.
Of more than 2,500 examples of this comic recorded in the CGC Census, only seven are graded 9.6 — and none higher.
Also conjured up is a Journey into Mystery #85 graded CGC 9.6. Published by Marvel Comics in 1962, this comic features the first appearance of Loki, Odin and Asgard. As the God of Mischief, Loki the adopted son of Odin, ruler of the majestic realm of Asgard, and the younger brother, and frequent rival, of the Mighty Thor. While Odin forged Asgard into a kingdom of order and might, Loki thrived in chaos and illusion, using sorcery and manipulation to challenge both his family and fate. The character found new depth and massive popularity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Tom Hiddleston’s charismatic performance reimagined the character as a fan-favorite villain turned God of Stories.
With bidding now topping $40,000, this comic has already set a new sales record for this grade, which previously was held by a 9.6 for $28,680 in 2012. The higher price can at least partly be attributed to the rarity of the book. There are about 1,900 examples of Journey into Mystery #85 in the CGC Census, but only four with the highest grade of 9.6.
