Remembering Jim Shooter: A Giant in the Comic Book Industry

It is with deep sadness that we at CGC acknowledge the passing of Jim Shooter, a true legend in the comic book world. His legacy has left an indelible mark on the industry, and his influence will continue to resonate for generations to come.

“On behalf of CGC and personally, I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Shooter,” said Brittany McManus, CGC Vice President of Autographs. “I had the privilege of working with him for over a decade through many signings, and in that time, I came to admire him not just as an icon in the industry, but as someone I genuinely respected and appreciated.”

McManus continued, "Jim was an incredible storyteller. He had a way of pulling people in — not with flash, but with substance. His insight, experience and perspective were unmatched, and you always walked away having learned something. His influence on comics is undeniable, but it’s his clarity, conviction and deep love for the craft that I’ll remember most. He will be missed."

Shooter’s remarkable journey began at just 13 years old, when he sold his first story to DC Comics. By 14, he was writing for the Legion of Super-Heroes, showcasing the storytelling prowess that would define his career. But it was during his tenure as Editor-in-Chief at Marvel Comics from 1978 to 1987 that Shooter reshaped the landscape of modern comics.

Under his leadership, Marvel entered a creative and commercial renaissance. Shooter championed creator rights, elevated editorial standards and helped launch groundbreaking titles like Secret Wars, one of the first major crossover events in comic book history. His sharp vision and passion for storytelling brought some of the industry’s most iconic characters and narratives to life.

In addition to his work at Marvel, Shooter co-founded Valiant Comics, further expanding the boundaries of comic book storytelling and building a universe beloved by fans worldwide.

Jim Shooter was more than a writer or editor. He was a visionary, a mentor and a force of innovation. His contributions to the comic book medium have shaped countless stories, inspired generations of creators and brought joy to millions of readers.

All of us at CGC extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and fans. We honor Jim Shooter’s extraordinary legacy, and we are grateful for the imagination, leadership and passion he brought to the world of comics.
