In 1986, Marvel celebrated its 25th anniversary with a striking cover gimmick: nearly every issue that month featured a colorful border of the publisher’s heroes and villains framing a central image. These “border comics” (also called “frames”) showcased everyone from Spider-Man to the X-Men in a mural wrapping the edges, with the character starring in that issue taking the spotlight in the middle. The uniform design created a snapshot of Marvel’s roster at the time and has since become a nostalgic favorite for collectors.

“Ever since I was a child and my dad used to bring me to comic stores I fell in love with the Marvel 25th Anniversary ‘frames.’ I remember having a separate short box for all of the 1986 frame covers I was able to get from dollar bins at local comic shops and conventions,” Robbj24 wrote on their Registry page. “On the top of my short box I had attempted to draw some of the ‘portraits’ from each of the titles ... suffice to say I was not then, and still am not an artist ... Collecting all of these issues has been one of my key goals since I started collecting and I am excited to be able to share with the world!”
