Unearthing the 2025 Spooky Award Winners!

Five hauntingly good collections rise to the top in our first-ever Spooky Awards, celebrating the best of horror in the CGC Comics Registry.

The wait is over, and the crypt has creaked open! CGC is thrilled to unveil the winners of our first-ever Spooky Awards, honoring the creepiest, crawliest and most creatively curated horror sets in the CGC Comics Registry.

These collectors showcase their collections that celebrate ghouls, ghosts and grinning monsters from comics past and present. Each winning set will receive a prize package, including exclusive CGC Comics swag, a CGC 9.8 copy of Creepshow with the limited-edition Spooky Awards label, a $250 grading credit and a few surprises we couldn’t resist sneaking in.

CheezeBoi – Friday the 13th (Avatar) – “A Return To Crystal Lake”

With a zealous newspaper ad, earworm score, and unlikely “big bad” star Betsy Palmer, Friday the 13th sliced up the big screen in 1980, shocking viewers and fueling the meteoric rise of the slasher genre. Forty-five years later, Jason’s creative stewards keep the camp counselors at Crystal Lake screaming within sprawling pop culture crossover, and Friday the 13th remains one of the most successful American franchises of all time.

CGC Comics Registry member CheezeBoi has put together the Avatar Press Friday the 13th titles in the “A Return to Crystal Lake” set. This set is full of high grades, CGC Signature Series, and killer variants. Check out the Friday the 13th: Bloodbath #1 Leather Variant graded CGC-graded 9.9!

Still Only 35c - Enormous (215 Ink) - Enormous

Human survivors become the prey of behemoth monsters and each other in the sci-fi horror tale Enormous, as protagonist Ellen Grace leads one of the last remaining groups through the ecological fallout of Phoenix, Arizona. This 12-issue series is wrapped in some stellar covers, enticing readers and collectors to take this fun ride through a classic, post-apocalyptic landscape.

CGC Signature Series, informative descriptions and high grades are everywhere in Registry member Still Only 35c’s “Enormous” set, while cool graphics and images round out the visuals. Check out the CGC Signature Series 9.8 ComicXposure Edition of issue #6 signed by writer Tim Daniel, one of only 250 printed!

Hangman’s Joke – Crow: Dead Time (2024) – “The ReBurn”

In 1989, James O’Barr’s The Crow introduced readers to Eric Draven, a spirit returned from death to seek vengeance for his own murder and that of his fiancé. This dark story of revenge would become an icon of independent comics, launching a wildly successful franchise beloved by fans worldwide.

Originally published in 1996 as the next installment to the comic titles, The Crow: Dead Time was reintroduced in 2024 with all-new art, gorgeous variant covers and fresh perspective on the story of Joshua, a young man murdered in the mid-19th century who returns for retribution 100 years later.

CGC Comics Registry member Hangman’s Joke is collecting this variant-driven set in gorgeous high grades, many with CGC Signature Series and CGC x JSA labels. Check out the CGC x JSA 9.8 Big Time Collectibles Edition for issue #2, featuring incredible art and autograph from the master himself, James O’Barr.

drhominidae – Marvel Zombies Limited Series & One-Shots – Marvel Zombies DRD

The question of “What If…?” has explored alternate outcomes to popular storylines at Marvel since 1977, with infamous results like Spidey joining the Fantastic Four and Wolverine as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

Zombie master Robert Kirkman brought the question into the modern horror genre in the first entry of the Marvel Zombies series, which finds Earth’s superheroes infected with a disease that leaves them battling the hunger to devour friend and foe alike.

Collecting all the titles of this hallowed, horror entry in the Marvel “what if” library, CGC Comics Registry member drhominidae has assembled this Marvel Zombies set in beautiful high grades! Check out all the CGC Signature Series books and the awesome homage covers in the set gallery!

Bagofleas – Casper’s Ghostland (1959) – Land-O-Spirits

Casper the Friendly Ghost has been happily haunting the land of the living since his 1945 introduction in Paramount’s Noveltoons theatrical cartoon shorts. An immediate and lasting success, Casper would star in television series, comic books and films, and is to this day one of the most recognizable cartoon characters ever created.

Designed for fun, kid-friendly reading, Casper’s Ghostland launched in 1959 and ran for nearly 100 issues, joining Casper with a cast of kindly friends and rascally uncles (The Ghostly Trio) for light-hearted adventures.

CGC Comics Registry member bagofleas has collected the “Land-O-Spirits” set since 2011, focusing strictly on CGC-graded 9.6 or better copies.
