Static debuted in 1993 as one of the flagship characters of Milestone Media, DC’s groundbreaking early-’90s imprint created to bring authentic diversity and creator ownership into mainstream comics.

Launched in partnership with DC but independently owned by its creators, the line produced characters like Icon, Rocket, Hardware and Blood Syndicate, all operating in a shared universe rooted in lived experience rather than archetypes.

Static, whose real name Virgil Hawkins, was conceived by Milestone cofounders Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle as a smart, funny and painfully relatable teenager navigating both superpowers and social pressure. Virgil’s electromagnetic abilities came from the “Big Bang,” a gang conflict gone wrong that reshaped Dakota City and created a new generation of metahumans. From the start, Static stood out for its natural dialogue, pop culture awareness and willingness to tackle issues like gun violence, racism, bullying and peer identity without turning the book into a lecture.

Static quickly became the breakout star, reaching a wider audience through the acclaimed Static Shock animated series in the early 2000s, which introduced the character to a generation far beyond comics shops.
