CGC Comics Registry Featured Set: Marvel Goes To Music Concerts & Movies
Posted on 3/2/2026
Film and television adaptations of popular comics are big business these days, but in the 1970s, Marvel Comics did things the other way around, adapting popular film and television projects into comics in its Marvel Comics Super Special series. This month’s featured CGC Comics Registry Set, Marvel Goes To Music Concerts & Movies by Registry Member Kir Kanos, is a complete set of the series that took the stars of stage and screen to the page.
Marvel Comics Super Special was Marvel’s glossy, oversized sandbox for pop culture crossovers, giving the publisher room to play outside standard continuity and format. Launched in the late 1970s, the series adapted films, TV specials and more with painted covers, heavier paper stock and a prestige feel that made each issue feel like an event.
“So many great adaptations and a few very unique stories that are not adaptations,” said Kir Kanos on the Registry page. “I myself have had a strong interest in movie adaptations ever since I was a kid in the 1980s. I started a collection of ‘reading copies’ of most of this series back in 1997.”
Kir Kanos has the complete run of the Marvel Comics Super Special series, issues #1-41, with many in CGC 9.8 grades. Some of the key issues in his collection include:
- a Marvel Comics Super Special #1 graded CGC 9.8 – the second comic appearance of KISS
- a Marvel Comics Super Special #4 graded CGC 9.8 – the origin of the Beatles
- a Marvel Comics Super Special #8 graded CGC 9.8 – adapting the Battlestar Galactica TV series
- a Marvel Comics Super Special #15 graded CGC 9.6 – adapting Star Trek: The Motion Picture
