Launched in 1972, Marvel Team-Up was built around pairing Spider-Man with a rotating cast of heroes to boost exposure for lesser-known characters. The series gave writers a flexible playground, leading to standout issues such as Spider-Man’s team-ups with the Human Torch, Iron Man and Doctor Strange. Indeed, there are some true keys in this series, as well as some bizarre team-ups. The format proved durable enough for Marvel to revisit, leading them to revive the series in multiple eras with new creative directions and exciting new team-ups.

The concept wasn’t unique to Marvel, either, as DC Comics found similar success with The Brave and the Bold, pairing Batman with a wide range of heroes, and later DC Comics Presents, which centered on team-ups featuring Superman.

Member mulder66 has the complete run of the Marvel Team-Up series, issues #1-150 and all seven annuals, with many in CGC 9.8 grades. Some of the key issues in his collection include:

  • Marvel Team-Up #1 graded CGC 9.4 — Spider-Man and Human Torch
  • Marvel Team-Up #15 graded CGC 9.4 — Spider-Man’s first meeting with Ghost Rider
  • Marvel Team-Up #53 graded CGC 9.8 — Hulk and the first John Byrne X-Men artwork
  • Marvel Team-Up #55 graded CGC 9.8 — Warlock and the first appearance of the Time and Power Gems.

  • Marvel Team-Up #141 graded CGC 9.8 — Early appearance of the black symbiote suit (debatably, some fans cite this as the first appearance tied with ASM #252, but records suggest it was released two weeks later.)
