CGC-certified Action Comics #1 'Rocket Copy' Lands at ComicConnect

Posted on 5/22/2026

Once the most expensive copy ever sold, this famous example of the first appearance of Superman is featured in ComicConnect’s Event Auction on June 1.

Three years ago, ComicConnect made history when it sold a comic certified by CGC® featuring the first appearance of Superman for more than $3 million, a record for any comic book. That record has since been broken (a few times), but ComicConnect is back again, with its Event Auction 66 opening on June 1, 2026, hoping to leave its stamp with the same example that it sold in 2023.

All eyes will be on an Action Comics #1 graded CGC 6.0 — famously known as the “Rocket Copy” for its red rocket stamp on the front cover. Published in 1938 by National Press, Action Comics #1 launched the Golden Age of comics with the introduction of Superman by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. The comic was an immediate hit, and the franchise rapidly expanded with merchandise, radio programming and movies.

While this was once the record-holder for most expensive comic, the market has seen several more Action Comics, including the current record sale of $15 million for a CGC 9.0 by ComicConnect in January 2026. Despite having only 86 copies recorded in the CGC Population Report, the rare book has appeared in several auctions this year already, including a CGC 7.0 Conserved that realized $1.4 million in May, a CGC 2.0 Qualified that realized $625,250 in February, and a CGC 5.0 Restored that realized $378,200 in February.

This isn’t the only Golden Age DC grail in the sale! Also available is a Batman #1 graded CGC 6.0, featuring the Dark Knight’s earliest adventures under his own title as well as the first appearances of the Joker and Catwoman.

According to the auction house: “This issue is actually part of several outstanding early Golden Age Batman comics from the estate of a Washington, D.C., collector who passed away in 2008. These rare issues present beautifully over a variety of grades, and we're excited to see these beautiful books now available to collectors and fans!”

More Batman books from this private collection can be found in this auction here.
