While you enjoy the fireworks, take a look back at some of comics' most memorable semiquincentennial issues!

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, it's a fitting time to look back at how comics have historically marked this milestone number with issue #250. For decades, publishers have used the anniversary issue to deliver major storylines, shocking twists, and memorable moments that reward longtime readers.

One of the most notable examples, and fitting for America’s celebration, is Captain America #250.

Published in 1980, Captain America #250 finds Steve Rogers at the center of an unexpected national conversation. After years of serving as America's symbolic defender, Captain America becomes the focus of a grassroots movement urging him to run for President of the United States. The issue explores a question that has followed the character since his debut: What role should a national symbol play in the nation's politics?

Rather than offering a simple answer, writer Roger Stern uses the milestone issue to examine the distinction between patriotism and partisanship. Steve Rogers ultimately declines the opportunity, believing Captain America must remain a champion for all Americans rather than align himself with a particular political office or movement. The story remains one of the character's most thoughtful explorations of civic duty, citizenship, and the ideals that define the nation.

Another great example is Detective Comics, which became the very first comic book series to reach issue #250 in 1957, featuring the story, "Batman's Super-Enemy!" In this momentous milestone, a criminal discovers an alien spacecraft that contains advanced technology and then uses the gadgets to repeatedly outmaneuver Batman and Robin. Eventually, the Dynamic Duo learn how the devices work and turn the tables on him.

More notable #250 issues include:

  • Batman #250 (1973) – contains the fan-favorite story "The Batman Nobody Knows!", often cited among the best Batman short stories of the Bronze Age.
  • Fantastic Four #250 (1983) – John Byrne's oversized anniversary battle between the Fantastic Four and Gladiator.
  • Iron Man #250 (1989) – sequel to the classic "Doomquest" storyline, reuniting Iron Man and Doctor Doom.
  • The Incredible Hulk #250 (1980) – memorable Hulk vs. Silver Surfer confrontation following Hulk's cosmic adventures.
  • The Flash #250 (1977) – notable for the return of Captain Cold and Golden Glider.
  • Amazing Spider-Man #250 (1984) – Spider-Man vs the Hobgoblin!

America's 250th anniversary is a celebration of the stories that help define a nation, and comics have spent generations chronicling heroes who embody those same ideals. From Captain America's presidential prospects to Superman's enduring optimism and Batman's relentless pursuit of justice, these landmark #250 issues are milestones that remind us to appreciate how far we've come, and imagine what comes next.
