CGC Comics Registry Featured Set: A Novel Idea !

Posted on 7/1/2026

This month’s featured set, by bagofleas, is a collection of Marvel Graphic Novel series that introduced readers to more mature Marvel storytelling.

Launched in 1982, the Marvel Graphic Novel series gave creators room to tell bigger, more experimental stories outside the limits of the monthly comic format. This month’s featured CGC Comics Registry Set, A Novel Idea ! by Registry Member bagofleas features a great selection of high-grade and signature examples.

Published in oversized prestige editions, Marvel Graphic Novel became a proving ground for ambitious projects and landmark debuts, including The Death of Captain Marvel, Dazzler: The Movie, and the first appearance of the New Mutants. The line attracted major creative talent such as Jim Starlin, Chris Claremont, and Frank Miller, helping redefine what superhero storytelling could look like while paving the way for the modern graphic novel market.

“There are so few of these out there in graded condition worth owning due to many of them having dark to black covers, but they really are cool!” wrote bagofleas on the Registry page. “Being larger and more cumbersome than regular comics also seems to make these harder to find in gradable condition. At one point in my life, I owned all of these, though not in the kind of condition I will require of myself to get them when it comes to CGC copies.”

Some of the key issues in this collection include:

  • a Marvel Graphic Novel #3 graded CGC Signature Series 9.4 signed by Jim Starlin – featuring Dreadstar
  • a Marvel Graphic Novel #4 graded CGC Signature Series 9.8 signed and sketched by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod – the first appearance of the New Mutants
  • a Marvel Graphic Novel #5 graded CGC 9.8 – featuring the X-Men “God Loves, Man Kills” story
  • a Marvel Graphic Novel #9 graded CGC 9.8 – featuring the Futurians
  • a Marvel Graphic Novel #17 graded CGC 9.6 – first appearance of Apocalypse in human form, En Sabah Nur
  • a Marvel Graphic Novel #24 graded CGC 9.8 – featuring Daredevil by Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz
  • a Marvel Graphic Novel #36 graded CGC 9.8 – the comic book adaptation of the film Willow

These comics, and more, helped earn this set the Top Ranked Award in 2011-2013. You can view them in a slideshow format here, and find more terrific sets by bagofleas here!
