Bidding for the first appearance of Superman has already surpassed $1 million more than two weeks before the July 11 auction.

Celebrate the red, white, and blue this July with Silver and Gold. Classic comics featuring the earliest adventures of Superman, Captain America, Spider-Man, and more — certified by CGC® — are already drawing revolutionary bids in Heritage Auctions’ Comic Book Signature Auction, which concludes on July 9-11, 2026.

Only hours after online bids began to be accepted, bidding had already surpassed $1 million for an Action Comics #1 graded CGC 4.5 (lot 91002).

Published in 1938 by National Press, Action Comics #1 launched the Golden Age of comics with the introduction of Superman by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. The comic was an immediate hit, and the franchise rapidly expanded with merchandise, radio programming and movies.

Remarkably, there’s also an Action Comics #1 graded CGC 6.5 Restored (lot 91001) available in the sale.

Despite having only 87 examples recorded in the CGC Population Report, the rare book has appeared in several auctions this year already, including a CGC 7.0 Conserved that realized $1.4 million in May, a CGC 2.0 Qualified that realized $625,250 in February, and a CGC 5.0 Restored that realized $378,200 in February. Most recently, a CGC 6.0 realized $2.7 million in a ComicConnect sale.

The auction also includes many other classic comics that, like Action Comics #1, are among the most valuable comics of all time.

Other CGC-comics in this sale include:

  • an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 8.0 (lot 91004)
  • an Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 8.0 (lot 91089)
