Golden Age Comics, Certified by CGC, Shine in Heritage Sale

There are plenty of golden opportunities in an August auction for collectors to fill the pockets of their collection with classic comics certified by CGC®. Online bidding is already underway for Heritage Auctions’ Golden Age Century Comics Showcase Auction, which will be held on August 13, 2026.

Among the classic comics in this sale is a Mystery Men Comics #3 graded CGC 7.5 (lot 83044). Published in 1939 by Fox Feature Syndicate, Mystery Men Comics #3 features early adventures of the publisher's growing roster of costumed crime fighters, including the mysterious Green Mask and other pulp-inspired heroes who blended detective fiction with emerging superhero conventions. Like many comics from the era, its low print run and fragile newsprint mean that high-grade surviving copies are exceptionally scarce, making it a prized acquisition for Golden Age collectors.

Also available is a Detective Picture Stories #1 graded CGC 5.0 (lot 83017). Published by Centaur Publications in 1936, Detective Picture Stories #1 is one of the earliest American comic books devoted entirely to original material. Released before the superhero era, the oversized anthology features detective and adventure stories presented in a format that bridged newspaper comic strips and the emerging comic book industry. Its striking cover and pulp-inspired storytelling reflect the popularity of crime fiction during the 1930s, while its rarity stems from a limited print run and the fragile nature of pre-war newsprint.

The Golden Age of Comic Books, spanning roughly from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s, represents a transformative era in the comic book industry, marked by the creation of iconic superheroes who would shape popular culture for decades to come. This period saw the emergence of characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America, captivating readers with their fantastical adventures and moralistic narratives.
