ComicConnect Offers Fantastic Four #48 with Highest Grade from CGC

It can be difficult to find vintage comics in high grades, but several remarkable examples of major key issues that are certified by CGC® have made their way into the ComicConnect Event Auction 67 on September 13-17, 2026.

Among the most pristine examples is a Fantastic Four #48 graded CGC 9.9, featuring the first appearance of the Silver Surfer and the first cameo appearance of Galactus. Released in 1966 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Fantastic Four #48 marks the beginning of the iconic “Galactus Trilogy” and introduces two of Marvel’s most powerful cosmic characters. This issue catapulted the Fantastic Four into a larger cosmic narrative and expanded the scope of the Marvel Universe.

This is the only example of this Silver Age key issue graded CGC 9.9, with no sales history to look back on, but a CGC Signature Series 9.8 signed by Stan Lee realized $144,000 through Heritage Auctions in September 2021 and a CGC 9.8 Universal realized $108,000 through Heritage in June 2021.

Also astonishingly well-preserved is a Wow Comics #4 Edgar Church Mile High Copy graded CGC 9.8. This comic, published by Fawcett Publications in 1942, burst onto newsstands with a colorful cover featuring Mister Scarlet and Pinky the Whiz Kid. The pair eventually resurfaced in DC Comics during the 1970s, with Pinky making more recent appearances in the DC Universe after taking over the mantle of Mister Scarlet. This 9.8 Wow Comics #4 is an exceptional Golden Age rarity from the prestigious Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree, easily surpassing the scarce 27 other copies currently listed in the CGC Population Report.

High-grade Silver and Golden Age comics remain among the most coveted books in the hobby, because many were read, handled, and discarded decades ago, leaving remarkably few survivors in pristine condition. At the highest grades, that scarcity becomes even more pronounced, with a single, exceptional copy standing apart from an already limited population.

The auction also includes Golden and Silver Age grails, including an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 5.0, a Detective Comics #1 graded CGC 4.5, and a Wonder Woman #1 graded CGC 8.5.
