International 'Misterios del Gato Negro' Certified by CGC Realizes $25,650
Posted on 9/3/2026
Fall is just around the corner, and Halloween is creeping ever closer. One spooky comic, certified by CGC®, scared up an amazing result in a Heritage Auctions sale earlier this year.
Featured in a May 2026 sale was a Black Cat Mystery Comics #50 Mexican Edition File Copy graded CGC 8.5 (lot 91043), which realized $25,620. Published in Mexico by La Prensa in 1954 as Misterios del Gato Negro #21, this collectible captures the international spirit of classic horror comics. The series blended the eerie tone of American pre-Code horror with its own cultural texture of shadowy graveyards, restless spirits, and moral reckoning. The comic features a stunning horror cover by artist Lee Elias, with internal artists such as Frank Frazetta and Sid Check.
There are 127 examples of the original US edition, published by Harvey Publications, in the CGC Population Report, but only six examples of this international edition by La Presna — with only two (including this copy) in the highest grade of CGC 8.5. This sale is a dramatic increase over a CGC 7.0 that realized $9,600 through Heritage Auctions in October 2025.
Combining the demand in the international market for the popularity of pre-Code horror with the rarity of high-grade examples, this comic offers collectors a particularly compelling opportunity, making it a perfect sale to spotlight as we head into the Halloween season.
CGC follows the same grading standards for international comics as it does for American comics. For some terrific examples of CGC-graded international comics, check out the CGC Gallery of Certified International Comic Books.
