Batman and Thor Comic Books Sell for Six Figures in November

November auction highlights include $380,000 paid for the first Batman comic book.

Batman and Thor both appeared in movies that opened in the United States in November, but not all the action was on the silver screen. The comic book grails that feature the first appearance of the superheroes topped the November comic book auction highlights.

A Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 2.5 sold for $380,000 on Nov. 28 at a ComicLink auction. This 1939 comic book featuring the first appearance of Batman is widely considered to be one of the top two most coveted comics around.

Heritage Auctions' Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction saw a trio of comic books sell for over $160,000 on Nov. 16. They include:

  • Journey Into Mystery #83, graded CGC 9.4, sold for $191,200. This 1962 comic book features the first appearance of Thor.
  • Detective Comics #33, graded CGC 8.0, sold for $167,300. This 1939 comic book was the fourth Batman cover and contains the origin of Batman.
  • Fantastic Four #1, graded CGC 9.0, sold for $161,325. This 1961 comic book contains the origin and first appearance of the Fantastic Four, Marvel's first superhero team.

Finally, two copies of Amazing Fantasy #15, both graded CGC 7.5, sold for six figures in separate auctions. One copy sold for $140,760 at a Hake's auction ending Nov. 16. The other sold for $130,000 at a ComicLink auction ending Nov. 28. This 1962 comic book features the first appearance of Spider-Man.
