CGC-certified Amazing Fantasy #15 Will Sell for Over $1 Million

Posted on 8/26/2021

The high-grade Spider-Man grail is the centerpiece of a Heritage Auctions sale in September.

Spider-Man is slinging his way into the spotlight once again, as an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) could be the first Silver Age book to surpass $2 million at auction. Heritage Auctions is also featuring other rare CGC-certified books, including well-preserved ones from The Promise Collection, in its upcoming Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction on September 9-11, 2021.

Just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man

The Amazing Fantasy #15 (lot 93001) is graded CGC 9.6, making it unsurpassed in the CGC Census in the Universal grade. The August 1962 book introduced Stan Lee’s beloved character, Spider-Man, whose movies over the past 20 years have helped rejuvenate the comic book collecting world. With a bid of $1.6 million more than two weeks before the auction, this example has already swung past another CGC 9.6 that realized a record $1.1 million in 2011.

Ultra-rare CGC-certified comic books have shown great strenth in 2021. ComicConnect announced in April that it brokered a sale of an Action Comics #1 graded CGC 8.5 for $3.25 million, a record for any comic book. And in January, a Batman #1 graded CGC 9.4 realized $2.22 million at a Heritage Auctions sale, a record for any non-Superman book.

Another Peter Parker powerhouse

The current Heritage sale also features an Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 9.4 (lot 93002). The March 1963 comic focuses on Spider-Man’s adventures with stories that recount how Peter Parker received his powers and teamed with the Fantastic Four against the Chameleon. Bidding had already surpassed $100,000 more than two weeks before the sale.
