Ten CGC-certified Comic Books Each Realize Six Figures in Heritage Sale

Posted on 11/30/2021

Examples of some of the most important comic books to the hobby drew spirited bidding from collectors.

Ten CGC-certified comic books each realized prices over $100,000 in the Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction on November 21, 2021. Presented by Heritage Auctions, the sale offered hundreds of desirable comic books, including extremely rare issues featuring Batman, Superman and Captain America.

The Dark Knight rises again

One of the top lots in the sale was a Detective Comics #27 graded CGC 7.0 Restored (lot 91041), which realized $336,000. The May 1939 issue includes various stories but is most noted for the first appearance of Batman. The CGC Census contains 74 examples, half of them in a Restored grade, like this example.

Still more powerful than a locomotive

The sale also included an Action Comics #1 graded CGC 6.5 Restored (lot 91032) that sold for $300,000. Like Detective Comics #27, Action Comics #1 is another grail among collectors, because it features the first appearance of Superman. Currently, there are 75 examples of Action Comics #1 recorded in the CGC Census, about 40-percent of them in a Restored grade.
