When submitting a large number of comic books in a single submission for Value, Economy or Modern tiers, take advantage of our Pre-screen Service.
By requesting Pre-screen Service and specifying a minimum grade on your invoice, you will be charged grading fees only for the comic books that meet or exceed your specified minimum grade.
This service works as follows. For example, if sending 100 miscellaneous Modern comics, you could request a minimum grade of 9.4. Comics grading at 9.4 and above are certified and encapsulated at usual rates. Comics grading below 9.4 are returned uncertified.
Minimum quantities are required and special service guidelines must be followed in order for your submission to qualify for Pre-screen Service. Additionally, CGC charges a reject fee for each comic returned uncertified. Fees are calculated based on the number of books submitted, the grading tier selected, the percentage that passed, and the minimum grade requested.
Please contact CGC customer service to discuss Pre-screens, pricing and submission eligibility.
Frequently Ask Questions About Pre-screens
What minimum grade should I choose when submitting through Pre-screen Service?
CGC will accept a pre-screen at any grade level except 9.9 and 10.0. You should choose a minimum grade that meets your collecting needs and goals.
If I select a pre-screen grade of 9.0, will any of my comics grade above 9.0?
If a comic book that is a 9.6 is submitted through a 9.0 pre-screen, the comic book would be certified as a CGC 9.6. The Pre-screen grade is simply the minimum grade requested for CGC to certify the comic book, per your instructions. CGC certifies many comics submitted through Pre-screen at grades much higher than the Pre-screen grade chosen.
How many books are necessary to qualify to send in a Pre-screen?
In general, CGC requires a 50-book submission per tier. Please call to discuss, as these guidelines are flexible and we are willing to work with our submitters to meet their needs.
How long will it take to have my books certified through Pre-screen?
The comic books should be certified at the same turnaround time as the tier submitted. CGC reserves the right to extend the turnaround time for Pre-screens to twice the length of the normal turnaround time. This is implemented only at times of high volume because of the extra work that goes into performing the Pre-screen.
I have 100 books that I want to submit through the Pre-screen Service. Can I break them up into different Pre-screen levels?
Yes. For example, you could submit 20 for an 8.0 Pre-screen, 25 for a 8.5 Pre-screen, 30 for a 9.0 Pre-screen, and 25 for a 9.2 Pre-screen. As long as the Pre-screen is submitted in large blocks per invoice, your submission is eligible. Remember, you can pick any grade you choose.
I have a submission of 20 books that I’d like to send in. Can’t I just put the Pre-screen grade next to each book because I want a different minimum level for each of them?
No, CGC will accept a Pre-screen only when all books on one submission form are for only ONE minimum grade.
I sent in 50 books through Pre-screen and six passed. Will I be charged a reject fee?
In this case, you would be subject to a reject fee. CGC graders had to review a significant number of books from your submission without certifying them. To avoid this outcome, please look at the books that you are submitting very carefully and remove comics that you feel will not meet the Pre-screen level. Don’t forget to check the back cover as well.
Can I submit a Walkthru or Express using Pre-screen Service?
No. Pre-screen service is available with the Value, Modern and Economy tiers. If you have Standard tier submission that you would like to submit for Pre-screen, please call to make special arrangements.
What happens if I send in a comic book for Pre-screen service that meets my minimum grade, but has been restored?
It will be certified with a Restored label (purple). In addition, if a comic book meets your minimum grade, but has a page or coupon missing, it will receive a Qualified label (green). The CGC Pre-screener assesses only grade during the Pre-screening process. The restoration detection expert reviews each book after the Pre-screen has occurred. Similarly, a CGC grader verifies page counts after the Pre-screen process has occurred.
