CGC-graded Superman #1 Stars in ComicConnect Sale

Posted on 12/2/2022

Bidding for the CGC-certified copy is expected to go well into the six figures.

The first issue of Superman continues to soar in the marketplace. A copy of Superman #1, graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), is the centerpiece of a ComicConnect auction, scheduled for December 12-16, 2022.

Two weeks before the sale bidding had already surpassed $200,000 and was expected to go much higher for the Superman #1 graded CGC 4.5. Superman #1 is the very first comic book devoted to one single hero. It was published by DC Comics in 1939, collecting the first four issues of the hero’s debut in Action Comics. This title currently holds the record for most valuable comic, after a CGC 8.0 copy sold for $5.3 million in January 2022.

Among the most iconic superheroes, Superman is responsible for launching an industry when he first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, ushering in a new type of protagonist that harkened back to ancient mythology, and inspiring the creation of countless heroes that dominated the newsstands throughout World War II.

After Superman’s debut, sales of Action Comics surged with each issue. DC then decided to give Superman his own title, another first for the burgeoning comic industry. Superman #1 hit the stands in the summer of 1939 and instantly sold out, proving the star power of the superhero.

Other popular CGC-graded comics in this auction include:
