The Guardians of the Galaxy has always been a revolving door of lesser-known cosmic heroes. Ultimately, however, that’s what made them a success.

The team first appeared in 1969, within the pages of Marvel Super-Heroes #18. At the time, the Guardians included Vance Astro, Martinex T'Naga, Charlie-27 and Yondu. In 1975, the Guardians of the Galaxy briefly headlined the “Marvel Presents” comic book series, and its membership included Starhawk (Stakar Ogord). After Marvel Presents #12, the Guardians were only seen as occasional guest stars in other heroes’ titles. In 1990, the Guardians of the Galaxy finally received their own new series, now featuring Starhawk, Aleta Ogord, Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Yondu, Martinex and Nikki. That series ran for 62 issues, until 1994.

A second Guardians of the Galaxy series was published in 2008. This team became the foundation for the 2014 film starring Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Vin Diesel (Groot), Bradley Cooper (Rocket) and Michael Rooker (Yondu). The film was seen as a gamble at the time, because Marvel films so far had stayed with the most recognizable heroes, and critics were unsure if an obscure team — which included a talking tree and raccoon — could capture audiences the same way.

The film made $773 million at the box office and finally launched the Guardians of the Galaxy into a household name after 45 years.

Other past Guardians team members appeared on screen in the film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, played by Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sylvester Stallone (Stakar Ogord), Michelle Yeoh (Aleta Ogord), Ving Rhames (Charlie-27), Michael Rosenbaum (Martinex), Miley Cyrus (Mainframe) and a CGI-created Krugarr. Some are rumored to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023, which also introduces Will Poulter as Adam Warlock and explores the origin of Rocket Raccoon.

The Guardians have carried their own comic book series multiple times since 2008. The collection in this set is from Vol. 3, which was published from 2013 to 2015. The nearly complete high-grade status of this collection has earned it the Best in Set Type Award 2016-2021.
