CGC-certified Star Wars Comics Blast Off in Heritage Auctions Sale
Posted on 7/12/2024
You won’t need to travel to a galaxy far, far away to find some of the greatest Star Wars comic books graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®). They are available to bidders in Heritage Auctions’ Star Wars Comics Showcase Auction, which will be held August 8, 2024.
Created by George Lucas, the Star Wars saga first hit screens in 1977 with the groundbreaking film that would come to be known as “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.” Set in a galaxy far, far away, the story follows the epic struggle between the Jedi and the Sith, as well as the battle between the Rebel Alliance and the tyrannical Galactic Empire. The 1977 Marvel series brought these adventures to the colorful pages of comic books, captivating readers with its imaginative storytelling and dynamic artwork. Marvel's Star Wars comics introduced new characters and planets while weaving original tales that complement the events of the films.
Among the highlights of this auction is a Star Wars #1 35 Cent Price Variant graded CGC 9.4. Released in 1977, this issue marks the debut of the Marvel Comics adaptation of the original Star Wars film. While most copies of Star Wars #1 were priced at 30 cents, a limited number were printed with a 35-cent cover price as part of a market test. This variant is rarer and significantly more valuable due to its limited distribution. While more than 17,000 copies of the standard version are listed in the CGC Census as of early July 2024, there are only 324 examples of the 35 Cent Price Variant, and only three of those are graded higher.

This comic features the CGC-witnessed signatures of Ashley Eckstein and Matt Lanter, who voiced Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker, respectively, in the animated film and television series that followed.
Comics in this auction can also be found in the CGC Comics Registry, where they earned the Best in Set Type Award in 2022 and 2023, and the Best Set Copper Age Award in 2022. This epic collection was also chosen as the April 2024 Featured Registry in the CGC Comics Long Box monthly newsletter.
