A record-grade copy of Superman #1 that is certified by CGC® is soaring in bidding at a Heritage Auctions sale that also includes many other Golden and Silver Age keys. Heritage Auctions’ Comic Books Signature® Auction is open now, with bidding scheduled to close on November 20-22, 2025.

The main event is an astonishing copy of Superman #1 graded CGC 9.0 (lot 93015), which had seen bidding exceed $3 million (including buyer’s premium) more than a week before the sale. Recently discovered in an attic in California, this comic earned the highest grade of any known example. Read more about this comic and the others discovered along with it here.

Also featured in this auction is a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 5.0 (lot 93007) and an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 7.5 (lot 93006).

Published by Timely Comics (a precursor to Marvel) in 1941, Captain America Comics featured the first appearance of Captain America. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the cover featuring Captain America delivering a punch to Adolf Hitler became an iconic image, reflecting the burgeoning patriotic fervor in the United States prior to its entry into World War II. This issue also introduced key characters such as Bucky Barnes, Cap's loyal sidekick, and the villainous Red Skull.

Two decades later, as Timely completed its transformation into Marvel, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko revolutionized the superhero genre once again when they introduced Spider-Man in the final issue of Amazing Fantasy. Superheroes up until that point were always adults, while the teenager was their sidekick. With Spider-Man, Lee said he wanted to create a teen hero who was more than a sidekick. His debut was a gamble, and it quickly paid off. Over the decades, Spider-Man has grown into one of the most beloved and recognizable characters in the world.
