CGC Launches New Registry Sets For Sports Magazines
Posted on 7/28/2026
On the heels of our recent announcement that “Newsstand Edition” will be added to certification labels for qualifying magazines, CGC® is proud to announce the addition of 66 new Registry set categories for Sports Illustrated, Sport, The Ring, and Slam magazine.
The market has experienced robust growth for certified magazines, particularly sports magazines, with cover appearances of the most successful and popular athletes setting the pace. A CGC 9.8 newsstand copy of Michael Jordan’s famous “A Star is Born” Sports Illustrated cover from 1984 brought $126,000 in 2023, with many other record-breaking prices set since.
With many new collectors entering the market and chasing these gems, it’s the perfect time for CGC to enhance the collecting experience with a launch of new Registry sets, starting with the most popular sports magazines of the past 100 years. These sets encompass cover appearances of famous athletes like Michael Jordan, Mickey Mantle, Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods, and Wayne Gretzky. Other sets include 1st cover appearances of athletes grouped by baseball, basketball, football, and hockey. We’ve even built a Registry set for the ultra-popular Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues!
More magazine sets will be forthcoming, so stay tuned!
