CGC Registry Featured Set: Showcase Debuts

This month’s featured set is A Few Asteroids (obscured) by Registry Member Mississippi Mudcats, featuring many Silver Age first appearances in fantastic high grades.

Among his collections is this particularly interesting set of DC Comics’ Showcase comics, which ran for 104 issues from 1956 until 1978. As part of the series' general theme, new and minor characters were introduced in order to gauge reader interest in them, without the difficulty and risk of showcasing untested characters on an ongoing basis.
“We (my son and I) are primarily collectors of Marvel and DC Silver-Age superhero titles, which were the books I read as a kid,” writes Tom Avent (aka: Mississippi Mudcats) on his Registry profile. “I started this collection roughly 20 years ago focusing on nine Marvel titles (ASM, Avengers, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Journey Into Mystery, Strange Tales, Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish and X-Men) and three DC titles (Flash, Green Lantern and JLA), all of which I read as a kid growing up in Oxford, Mississippi. Through the years, we have added more and more Marvel and DC titles, including at least a sampling of all the original JLA members.”
This month’s featured set includes some really impressive high-grade Silver Age keys, including:
- Showcase #4 graded CGC 9.2, with the first appearance of the Silver Age Flash (Barry Allen)
- Showcase #8 graded CGC 9.2, with the first appearance of Captain Cold
- Showcase #22 graded CGC 9.0, with the first appearance of the Silver Age Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
- Showcase #30 graded CGC 9.4, with the first solo title for Aquaman
- Showcase #34 graded CGC 9.0, with the first appearance of The Atom (Ray Palmer)
- Showcase #37 graded CGC 9.4, with the first team appearance of The Metal Men
- Showcase #60 graded CGC 9.8, with the first appearance of the Silver Age Spectre
These comics are part of the reason this collection was awarded the Best in Set Type 2016-2022 and Achievement in Collecting Comics in 2013 and 2021.
