For Pride Month, this set by PinoyBoyPride highlights comics that represent the LGBTQA+ perspective.

This month’s featured set is LGBTQA+ PIVOTAL COMICS - LOVE IS LOVE by CGC Comics Registry Member PinoyBoyPride. The owner describes the set as “representing the LGBTQA+ Perspective, A Queer Eye for the Comics Guy.”

The set includes the first appearance of prominent LGBTQA+ characters, storylines and creators, such as:

  • Marvel Boy #1 (vol 2) introducing a new Marvel Boy as an LGBTQA+ hero named Noh-Varr and signed by the non-binary series writer Grant Morrison.
  • Young Avengers #1 with the first appearance of Hulkling, who is in a same-sex relationship with his teammate Wiccan.
  • Alpha Flight #106, which reveals Northstar is gay.
  • Astonishing X-Men #51 featuring the marriage of Northstar and Kyle Jinadu.
  • Earth 2 #3, which reveals Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern, is gay.
  • Uncanny X-Men #600, which reveals Iceman is gay.
  • The Woods #1 signed by openly gay creator and GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Award winner James Tynion IV.

Historically, LGBTQA+ themes and characters were excluded from the content of comic books and comic strips. The Comics Code Authority (CCA), which governed mainstream US comics from 1954 to 1989, prohibited any mention of homosexuality, resulting in subtle hints or subtext being the only indicators of an LGBT character's sexual orientation or gender identity in mainstream comics. However, starting in the early 1970s, “underground comix” emerged as a platform where LGBT themes could be explored. These independently published comic books and series delved into storylines that addressed political issues relevant to LGBT readers.

Notably, the late 1970s witnessed the introduction of openly gay characters in prominent American comic strips, and their popularity grew throughout the 1980s. Since the 1990s, equal and openly LGBT themes have become increasingly prevalent in mainstream US comics.

PinoyBoyPride’s set goals are, “Collecting pivotal CGCs for me personally growing up a gay boy in Georgia and pivotal comics representing the LGBTQA+ perspective in the history of comics.”
