Name of comic: Star Wars #68

Comic publisher: Marvel Comics

Date: February 1983

Variants: In addition to the original newsstand and direct editions, there was also a Canadian price variant and a Mark Jewelers Edition. In 2007, the comic was reprinted and packaged with a Hasbro two-pack action figure set.

What makes it special? In this story, by David Michelinie and Walt Simonson, readers got one of the earliest glimpses into Mandalorian lore through the mysterious bounty hunter Fenn Shysa, who claims the title of Mandalore and ties himself to the legacy of Boba Fett. The issue introduces the idea of Mandalorians as a proud warrior culture with a fractured history, hinting that their armor and identity carry deep symbolic weight beyond simple bounty hunting.

Why is it interesting now? Boba Fett has captured the attention of fans ever since he debuted on film in The Empire Strikes Back. While remaining a character shrouded in mystery, his origins and the story of Mandalore has been explored in greater depth in the Star Wars prequel films and television shows like The Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett. Now the story jumps back to the big screen, where it began, with the 2026 release of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” in theaters this month.

Did you know? The character of Boba Fett was inspired by Clint Eastwood’s “Man with No Name” character featured throughout Sergio Leone’s “Dollars Trilogy” films. He made his first public appearance at the San Anselmo County Fair in California, in 1978, and then two months later on screen for the first time in the “Star Wars Holiday Special.” By the time “The Empire Strikes Back” film was widely released, there were already two published graphic novel adaptations. You can read more about the character’s history here!
