Name of comic: Avengers #8

Comic publisher: Marvel Comics

Date: 1964

Variants: A UK price variant edition was released in 1964, and a facsimile edition was published in 2023.

What makes it special? This issue is the first appearance of Kang the Conqueror, who, in the comics, is Nathaniel Richards (a distant relation to the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards) from the 31st Century. After discovering Dr. Doom’s time travel technology, Nathaniel travels back to ancient Egypt, where he was known as Pharaoh Rama-Tut, and eventually returns to the future where he conquers Earth under the name Kang the Conqueror.

Why is it interesting now? There are many variants of Kang throughout the multiverse, and we met the first one, He Who Remains (played by Jonathan Majors), in the Disney+ series “Loki” to set up Kang as the next threat to the MCU. Kang makes his formal introduction in theaters in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in 2023.

Did you know? Avengers #8 is the first appearance of Kang, but Richards as Rama-Tut appeared even earlier in Fantastic Four #19 (1963).
