What makes it special? Oh, nothing much. Just the first appearance of this little character called (*checks notes*) Spider-Man. Heard of him?
Why is it interesting now? When is Spider-Man not at the top of the collector’s list? But this month especially is notable, as December 28 is the birthday of Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee! After helping create the Marvel Universe in the 1960s, Stan Lee became a household name associated with comic books as well as a popular figure in the Marvel Universe of films. He passed away on November 12, 2018, at the age of 95.
Did you know? Stan Lee came up with the idea of Spider-Man because he wanted a teen hero, and not just a sidekick. After initially rejecting it, Marvel later agreed to let him print the story in the final issue of Amazing Fantasy. Stan developed the issue with artist Steve Ditko, and Jack Kirby provided the cover. Sales went through the roof, and Marvel quickly changed its tune about Spider-Man. He was rushed into his own series, beginning decades of Amazing stories. He is now one of the most popular and recognizable heroes in all of comics!
