Name of comic: San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2

Comic publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Date: August 1993

Variants: None

What makes it special? This anthology has the first appearance of Hellboy in a story on pages 23-26 titled “Mike Mignola’s Hellboy.” This book is the second of four annual editions (1992-1995) of San Diego Comic-Con Comics, but the vast majority of CGC-graded books from this series are from the 1993 edition that introduced the paranormal hero Hellboy.

Why is it interesting now? Hellboy returns to the silver screen in a reboot in April. The first two movies, 2004’s “Hellboy” and 2008’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” were generally liked by critics and found modest success at the box office. In the latest installment, the hero (portrayed by a new actor) faces off against a sorceress.

Did you know? Ron Perlman, who portrayed Hellboy in the first two movies, also voiced Clayface in “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s. David Harbour, who takes on the title role in the latest movie, played a government official in the 2016 “Suicide Squad” film.

Total graded by CGC: CGC has graded 684 copies, with 107 having Signature Series labels.

CGC median grade: The median grade for these books is Near Mint+ 9.6

CGC highest graded: As of Feb. 19, 2019, CGC has not graded any copies as Mint 9.9 or 10.0. Therefore, the 208 copies (nearly a third of all graded) in Near Mint/Mint 9.8 can all claim to share the best grade.

Sales highlights: Copies in high grades can be found for sale online for a few hundred dollars. Look for CGC’s yellow Signature Series label for a certified signature from Mignola or someone else connected to the title that makes the book more valuable.

CGC Comics Registry Champion: A set named "m’s hellboy" has won Best in Set Type for five straight years in the Hellboy (1993-1994) category, which covers 15 books. The set includes a San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 and eight others, all in CGC 9.8. Explore this and other collections in the CGC Comics Registry.
